I've been thinking lately about how our perception of SEO has been skewed by what used to be much easier: getting a Web page into the top 10 of Google search results for a head term (a.k.a "money term") in a fairly short amount of time. Much has changed and yet many clients still sing the same song. They want to be in the top 10 for "some money keyword", and no, not 6 months from now...today.
Recently, I finished a WordPress installation and customization for a Vancouver Web design client. Though he needed Web design, he was also very suspicious of website designers and SEO types. He said the words "Web designers" with a hint of disdain, like Seinfeld saying "Newman". His opinion of Vancouver website designers was honestly formed by his experiences with several. Yes, several...not one.
